Frequently Asked Questions

What are the school hours?

Classes are in session from 8:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dismissal on Wednesday is at 11:55 a.m.

How much do breakfast and lunch cost?

The Snug Harbor School has been declared a universal school under the school lunch program. Therefore, we provide free breakfast and lunch to all students.

Are after-school programs available?

Throughout the year, before- and after-school academic, sports, and enrichment activities are provided to students. In addition, the Germantown Neighborhood Center, which is located next to the school, provides a number of after-school activities for students. Check with the school office and the Germantown Neighborhood Center for information.

How can students participate in school governance?

Students can be elected to our student council. Fourth graders serve as council representatives and fifth graders serve as council officers. In addition to setting a positive example for the student body, the student council conducts several community service, school pride, charitable, and human rights projects throughout the school year.

Do you offer any activities during the summer?

Each summer we offer students an optional four-week summer school program. During the summer school session, students are given the opportunity to improve their reading and math skills. They also participate in field trips and enrichment activities. The Germantown Neighborhood Center sponsors a two-week summer day camp following the summer school session. During the day camp children can participate in a number of recreational activities.

What health services are offered at school?

We have a full-time school nurse who oversees the general health of our students and maintains their health records. The nurse is available to provide emergency first aid and administer prescription medications. Prescription medications, however, must be administered in accordance with state law and Quincy Public Schools' policy. The nurse would be more than happy to discuss any medical concerns you may have or answer any of your questions.

What are the school's attendance policies?

Good attendance is necessary for a student to succeed in school. Therefore we monitor each child's attendance and punctuality very closely and provide a number of awards for perfect and excellent attendance. When attendance or tardiness problems do occur, we work with parents, and the school system's attendance officer to remediate these problems. We recognize, however, that there are times when children are ill and cannot attend school. If your child will be absent from school we request that you call the school between 7:30-8:15 a.m. to notify us of the absence. A written note should be sent to your child's teacher following the absence.
